Name is in honor of Townsend Engineering Company (TECo), a Des Moines-based firm previously owned by Great Ape Trust Founder Ted Townsend. Over the years, TECo employees donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to The Trust.

What makes Teco unique?

Teco, the son of Kanzi and Elikya, is a third-generation bonobo to be reared in Great Ape Trust’s hallmark Pan/Homo (Pan paniscus/Homo sapiens) environment and is a portent for the future of ape language research, a 40-year body of work by Dr. Sue Savage-Rumbaugh; her mentor Dr. Duane Rumbaugh and Great Ape Trust Scientific Director, William M. Fields.
